Improved Sentinel 3 OLCI marine products available through NEODAAS

During the lifetime of Earth Observation instruments, such as the Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI), improvements are made to the system calibration and algorithms used to generate products.

To ensure NEODAAS continues to supply the best available products to users, we incorporate any updates made available into our processing systems. 

In February 2021, EUMETSAT released updates to their Sentinel 3 OLCI marine products (Collection 3) to provide updated System Vicarious Calibration gains, more accurate chlorophyll retrieval and better masking. These improvements mean data provided from Sentinel 3 OLCI better match measurements being made in situ (e.g. collecting samples by boat) and measured by other satellites. Having measurements from different systems aligning with each other is key to forming a consistent picture of the state of our ocean.

As part of the Sentinel 3 Validation Team (S3VT) and OLCI Synergy Quality Working Group (OLCI-SYN QWG), Plymouth Marine Laboratory has supported EUMETSAT in product development and validation of Collection 3 through the AMT4SentinelFRM and AMT4OceanSatflux projects. 

Data available through the NEODAAS Portal at 1 km resolution will use the Collection 3 data from February 2021 onwards, with the full time series being added once this is available from EUMETSAT.
